Cameroon's TOGHU attire one time erstwhire ridiculed now worn with pride

Toghu Army Movement

The Origin

We chose the TOGHU which is a hand-made embraided fabric which has been proper to the people of the grasslands and northwest regions of Cameroon. A tradition handed down through the centuries in quasi anonymity and discretion.

I’m Overwhelmed by the universal Accptance of Toghu, Maybelle Boma, Founder of the #Toghu Army

Theme

Aspiration 5 of Agenda 2063 of the African Union which envisions ‘An Africa with a strong cultural identity, common heritage, shared values and ethics. This calls for an African cultural renaissance which is pre-eminent and that inculcates the spirit of Pan Africanism;

Culture . Redemption . Restoration .

One-time Cameroonian taboo cultural outfit, the Toghu , mostly worn by the country’s citizens in the English speaking Northwest Region, is today living its golden hours, with its uniqueness capturing attraction and acceptance nationally and internationally. The now-widely’-worn cultural design has not just been attributed with a new symbolism by time, but political actors in the country have found favour in the outfit as a medium to express their political ideologies.

It is the onset of a change of narrative. We as a people are tenable, unbreakable and very loving. To those of you who could not make it to the event for one reason or the other, your messages and words of encouragement cannot be underestimated. You reminded us that we are not alone on this journey which we trust will span space and time. The launching of the Toghu Army Movement on Saturday September 25, 2021, in Maryland USA, was a great success and this is thanks to the family spirit that was there for all to see and appreciate. We want to specially thank the Cameroonian Embassy in the United States of America for their amazing show of awareness of the importance of our culture and their encouragement. The presence of the embassy's delegation at the event, confirmed the recognition of the unique role our institutions have to play in the promotion of our culture globally. Our Cultural diversity and identity, is a gold mine which remains insufficiently exploited. It will forever remain an inexhaustible source of pride and solidarity we can always tap into. We take this opportunity to invite every Cameroonian and every other African, to join us, so together, we can pilot this vision to the destination. We thank God for using the Launching ceremony as an opportunity for some of our Afro-American brothers and sisters who have been inspired by culture to retrace their roots to Cameroon. We hope this will encourage many more. We just started the movement with the launching, and we want to officially announce that our next stop will be in our beloved fatherland, Cameroon. Through love and solidarity, we can show that we are indeed proud of who we are!! Again, Thank you all. *Maybelle Boma* *Toghu Army Movement Founder* *Hetty Awambeng* Co Founder Toghu Army Movement Photo:Bango Photography Emma Man U
